Abstract:
Sustainable production and use of biomass for the biobased economy and bioenergy is continuously discussed. In order to gain insight into the global agricultural and environmental limitations of biomass use a study has been carried out. Cascading is a precondition in the transition towards a bio-based economy, as part of the concept of the ‘Trias Biologica’, which is a logical concept to feed both people and livestock, to produce enough materials and energy to meet demand, and at the same time stay well within the planetary boundaries. This paper will come up with suggestions to translate this Trias Biologica into biobased policies.
