Abstract:

Within the work described a new model based control strategy for biomass boilers has been implemented for the first time at an industrialscale wood chip fired grate furnace with a nominal boiler capacity of 15 MW. Thereby, mathematical models for all relevant parts of the hot water fire tube boiler were used for the design of a model based control strategy which allows an explicit consideration of the coupled and nonlinear behavior of the biomass furnace. The implemented control strategy resulted in an improvement of the stability and the overall performance of the furnace. In particular, a considerable improvement of the partial load operation could be observed leading to higher efficiencies (due to of the reduced oxygen content of the flue gas) as well as higher combustion temperatures enabling lower emissions.
