Abstract:

The focus of this study was to discuss on preparations of Finnish CHP power plants for domestic fuel crisis. Past few years the production of peat has been lower than consumption because of rainy harvesting seasons and lack of new licensed production fields. The consumption and production of wood fuels varies also annually. Study concentrated on supply security of domestic fuels: peat and solid wood fuels. Also supply of fuels and average storing volumes were studied. Effects of domestic fuel crisis on Finnish CHP power plants and how power plants were prepared for the crisis were analyzed. Study was carried out by a questionnaire sent for 28 large Finnish CHP power plants producing district heat. The most important factor for supply security of peat fuel was currently time-consuming environmental permission process for new production fields. Operation of forest industry was the most important factor in supply security of biomass because amount of biomass depends highly on annual felled volumes. Supply security of biomass could be improved by terminals.
