Abstract:
An optimization model was built for biomass procurement for powerplants taking into account properties of fuels from multiple sources, seasonal changes in biomass quality, changes of fuel quality during storage over time, and the effect of fuel moisture content (MC) on boiler efficiency. The work included an implementation of the model for a combined heat and power (CHP) plant in Finland that uses approximately 500 GWh/year of biomass fuels. The case study included 10 external fuel suppliers with 4 different types of biomass fuels delivered by each supplier, and three different fuel stocks maintained and managed by the energy company itself. The model can be used for minimizing the price paid per unit of energy produced with biomass.
