Abstract:

The use of the biomass obtained from riparian vegetation for energy goals has been recently suggested, a proposal that meets the need to produce biomass without soil subtraction to nonfood crops and, at the same time, allows the exploitation of riparian biomass, otherwise unused. The study was carried out in a land reclamation authority of central Italy in areas where the giant reed (Arundo donax L.) vegetation was prevalent. A hydraulic forestry mulcher with hammers, mounted on a track excavator, and a mulcher with knives, on a selfpropelled machine were compared. The implements were used in a single or a double pass. The research was finalized to investigate the yield potential of the Arundo growing alongside the river banks and if the machineries provided a feedstock having physical characteristics compliant with the qualitative parameters required for energy transformation. The results have evidenced as the product obtained from the mulcher mounting knives fulfill better the technical requirements in terms of bulk density and particle size distribution, performing both one or two passages.
