Abstract:

The aim of this work was to evaluate the storage effects and the fuel quality of wood chips produced from two different parts of poplar trees (Populus x canadensis M.): stem and crown. The material separation has allowed monitoring the storage behaviour of the two chip kinds in an independent way, evaluating which type of product would respond better to the degradation effects of storage. The fuel quality was evaluated through chemical and physical analysis as according to European standards. The internal heat development was very similar in the piles of the same material. In contrast, temperature patterns were very much different between the two treatments. Results showed that chips from crown material had better storage properties and exhibited lower decay than chips from stem wood.
