Abstract:

Carbona Inc. is a gasification technology company within the global Andritz Group. The company has over several years developed fluidized bed gasification technologies for biomass based on both bubbling and circulating fluidized bed methods. This presentation deals with pressurized air and steamoxygen blown bubbling fluidized bed gasification and gas cleanup applied for power, transportation fuels, bioSNG and chemicals production. The gasification and gas cleanup technology has been applied in a biomass based CHP plant in Skive, Denmark. The pressurized gasifier with catalytic gas cleanup process produces gas for 3 gas engines to generate 6MWe and 12 MW district heat. This plant has also served as a platform for laying the basis for the development of the process for producing clean synthesis gas for various catalytic chemical processes. A major step has been cooperation between ANDRITZ Carbona and UPM whereby an existing pilot plant at the Gas Technology Institute (GTI) in the USA was modified to further develop steamoxygen gasification of biomass and catalytic tar reforming of product gas. During a test program of several years, extensive process and design data has been generated with various woody biomass fuels. Based on this development ANDRITZ Carbona is involved in a biomasstoliquid (BtL) project with UPM to produce 100 000 tn/a of renewable diesel from forest residues. The technology is based on gasification. The project is situated in Strasbourg, France and was selected for financing in the first round of European NER 300 program. This paper will discuss the Skive CHP plant, testing at GTI pilot plant and highlight UPM biodiesel project in France.
