Abstract:

Renewable energy sources (RES) are receiving growing support from public authorities because of the environmental and social advantages they procure compared with conventional energy sources. The efficacy of the incentive schemes introduced at national level to define future strategies has now become a crucial issue. Purpose of the work - The aim of the paper is an analysis of the development process of renewable energy sources in Italy, through comparing the incentives introduced by legislative initiatives. Approach –Trends in the RES sector in Italy are mapped and the incentives available in Italy analysed. Subsequently, the main constraints limiting full development of RES are highlighted and critiqued. Scientific innovation and relevance – The development of RES to their full capacity as an authentic driving force in sustainability building processes. Italy has considerable potential in terms of renewable energy sources. Their exploitation and development would contribute not only to reducing the green house effect, but also to fostering national energy safety and economic development. Results – The research underlines the efficacy of the different incentive schemes for the development of RES from a theoretical perspective. In addition, price-based approaches are compared with an installed power approach. Findings are highlighted and the need for innovation in incentive regulations is discussed. Conclusion – The paper is a contribution to the development of RES to their full capacity through an adequate regulatory design. The analysis shows that incentives for greater investment in renewable technology may be sufficient to achieve significant economies of scale.
