Abstract:
The successful utilization of biomass fuels supports the EU commission goals for 2020. In the frame of the European co-funded project DEBCO, advanced co-firing applications of various feedstocks have been demonstrated in lab-scale up to industrial scale. This paper reports on fly ash quality from combustion of high thermal shares of a herbaceous biomass and a woody biomass. Results show that for very high thermal shares in a large-scale industrial pulverized fuel facility the fly ash collected from the ESP still has a quality that meets limits set in EN450-1. For pure wood combustion in the large-scale industrial pulverized fuel facility, the results show that the limits for EN450-1 are not met, as expected. However, unexpectedly the fly ash still has a good pozzolanic quality when assessed to limits set in EN450-1. SEM-EDX analyses showed a good amount of aluminum and silica contents on particles in the fly ashes, suggesting a good pozzolanity. Results from a 0.5 MWth pilot-scale facility show that a herbaceous biomass co-fired up to 50 % thermal share does not seem to have any negative impact on existing fly ash utilization routes. A dual utilization of the fly ashes may be optimal.
