Abstract:

Cereal straw for energy production in small and medium sized combined heat and power stations is well known in Denmark and has contributed to the Danish energy system since the 80’es. Today some 1 million tons of straw is combusted annually in Denmark and the background for this shall be found in the Danish energy policy substituting imported fossil fuels with domestic fuel sources in the first and also promoting sustainability. Cereal straw is generally perceived as a very difficult fuel. Problems with fouling and corrosion on the tubes of e.g. the final superheater sections are often reported and can be attributed to the high content of mainly chloride and potassium in straw leading to harmful chemical reactions in the hot environment prevailing. Through intensive research and development in a fruitful cooperation between utilities, equipment suppliers and universities over a period of some 20 years, it has been possible to push the limits in regard of steam parameters and at the same time maintain an acceptable level of maintenance cost. In this presentation fuel characteristics and the general corrosion mechanism will be highlighted. Further some of the design features and operational experiences will be presented.
