Abstract:

Stabilization of the sludge is a necessity before being removed for storage or subsequent recovery. Purpose of stabilization is to reduce or to eliminate potential decay and bad odours, as well to reduce the pathogen potential. This article focuses on research with issues related to biological stabilization of sludge in Timisoara waste water treatment plant, by anaerobic and aerobic digestion, processes that, in addition to reducing or eliminating pollution risks, offers two very important green energy products, namely biogas and fermented sludge. The paper presents a possible novel scheme of an energy recovery plant, by combining of sludge and biogas combustion with drying technologies. Through the cogeneration of electricity and heat, based on the recovery treatment of the sludge and biogas, the energy consumptions necessary for of sludge drying and burning processes, as well as for the flue gas treatment, are fully covered, resulting a significant gain of energy in the general balance. This surplus can cover a rate of up to 75 % of the entire energy consumption of the wastewater treatment plant, based on calculus accomplished for the Timisoara waste water treatment plant.
