Abstract:
Flanders, the Dutchspeaking region in the north of Belgium, aims to develop a circular and biobased economy. This ambitious goal gave rise to the question if it is possible to increase the use of biobased waste and industrial byproducts in the chemical industry in Flanders. As Flanders houses one of the biggest chemical clusters in Europe, this could also benefit the sustainability of this sector. More specifically, this paper answers the following two questions: (1) How biobased is the Flemish chemical industry today? and (2) How can the government encourage the use of biobased waste and industrial byproducts as a feedstock in the chemical industry?
