Abstract:

In the frame of a study for EnBW Energie Baden-Württemberg AG and Erdgas Südwest GmbH a model agricultural biogas plant was adapted to enable the switch from permanent production (standard scenario) towards demand-driven electricity production (following the diurnal profile of electricity demand of a household). Subsequently, both feasibility and additional costs for demand-driven production were examined. The model biogas plant was modified to match the requirements for flexible electricity production: gas storage capacity was increased and two CHP units instead of one were operated. These units were run in cyclic (on-off) operation. In order to compare constant electricity production (standard scenario) with demand-oriented production, investment and operation costs were calculated and the electricity price allowing for a return on investment of 10 years was determined in both cases. According to the model, short-term adaptation of electricity production to fluctuating diurnal electricity demand could cover medium but not extreme load profiles. The adaptation of the agricultural biogas plant to allow flexible electricity production increased electricity price from 19.5 to 22 ct/kWh, i.e. by 13%.
