Abstract:

Biomass Research Centre has completed the installation of a second generation bioethanol production prototype from ligno-cellulosic biomass. The research project “Second generation bioethanol and other environmental sustainable biofuels”, financed by Italian Ministry of Environment and protection of natural resources, aims the experimentation of several lingo-cellulosic biomass samples such as straw, cardoon, miscanthus, arundo donax, vineyard and olive prunings, forestry residues. The prototype consists of the following monitored parts: steam production system, steam explosion reactor, enzymatic hydrolyser, fermenter and distiller. The steam explosion pretreatment allow to have a biomass more easily attackable from enzymes and yeasts, that transform cellulose in sugars and then in alcohol, which is concentrated in the distiller. The article focuses on testing the described typologies of biomass in different working conditions of the sections (temperature, pressure, Ph and test duration) and modifying input biomass conditions; the study will analyze intermediate products and distilled samples obtained in terms of low heating value, ultimate and proximate analysis; moreover, sugars and bioethanol content will be measured by high performance liquid chromatographic (HPLC). Finally, mass and energy flows in the different selected conditions, will be studied, evaluating and optimizing the process energy efficiency in function of bioethanol production.
