Abstract:
Spain is the second largest country in size in Europe and the first one in available surface for agriculture and forestry; however it is only the sixth one in primary energy production from solid biomass. Spanish total surface is about 50 million ha; 56% of this surface is agricultural land and 36% of the total surface is forest area. Despite the great potential of Spain for solid biomass; several political, economical, cultural and climatic reasons are argued for explaining the low development of solid biomass power plants in Spain. While in many countries in Europe it is very difficult to obtain land for growing energy crops and it always competes with food crops, in Spain there is a great surface of available agricultural land that it is not used for food crops and would be used for energy crops. The recent suspension of the feed in tariff system for renewable energies by the Spanish Government has increased the gap between the average level of development of biomass to energy in Europe and in Spain.
