Abstract:

This work presents an overview of the objectives and the main results of the BIOMASUD Project, Mechanisms for the sustainability and valorization of the solid biomass market in the SUDOE region. The main objective of the BIOMASUD project is the creation and implementation of a certification scheme for the quality and sustainability of typical solid biofuels of Southern Europe, whose use is widespread in residential heating applications. Among the results of the project, it can be highlighted an inventory of stakeholders related to the solid biomass market in SUDOE, including more than 7500 records of resource industries generating byproducts of timber, olive oil, nuts, etc., and nearly 900 other stakeholders involved in the trading, installation, energy services, research, etc. All these records are included in the GIS application BIORAISE (http://bioraise.ciemat.es/bioraise/) which has capabilities such as the search and summary of biomass resources and costs in different geographic areas. The handbook that establishes the requirements for the companies to gather the BIOMASUD quality and sustainability distinction was launched in November 2012, and can be downloaded in the BIOMASUD project web page. Some preliminary pilot audits have been performed in Spain during April 2013, and the two first certifications for solid biofuels producers are expected to be granted by June 2013.
