Abstract:

Bioethanol generated from household, agricultural or forestry waste is currently being sought as a second generation biofuel. Wheat straw is an abundant source of biomass in Europe and second in the world to rice straw. To convert lignocellulosic residues such as wheat straw to bioethanol in the most efficient and economical manner we require an organism that can convert hexose and pentose sugars into ethanol. Natural fermentative ecosystems such as agricultural manure and forest floors containing decomposing wood and leaf litter are potential sources for yeast strains for improved production of bioethanol. Phenotyping of 15 yeast isolates from manure heap ecosystem at Sutton Bonington, Leicestershire, UK by HPLC has identified pentose (xylose & arabinose) utilisers and ethanol producers. Isolating yeasts from these sources we have found new strains and species that can improve conversion of wheat straw to bioethanol.
