Abstract:

The increasing interest in biomass energy facilities requires the development of a clear and transparent methodology to identify the best solutions with respect to plant location and size, in order to minimize both the economic costs and environmental impacts. To achieve this optimization, a large number of approaches have been already applied: network location models, mixed-integer programming, a combination of fuzzy multi-objective programming and genetic algorithm, etc. The implementation of Geographical Information System in addressing this issue seems to be a very suitable approach. An energy planning exercise was performed considering a particular geographical area with its specific availability of agricultural residues (straws from winter cereal crops, pruning from olive groves and vineyard) potentially useful to supply biomass energy plants based on combustion technology for power generation. Different scenarios were outlined considering an increasing number of plants in the same area and calculating their best locations (to minimize transportation costs) and the optimal power capacity (to maximize profits). The first step of the proposed methodology is a Multi-Criteria GIS-based approach to find potential eligible plant locations followed by the application of an economic model for the optimal dimensioning of the biomass facilities based on the maximization of the Net Present Value.
