Abstract:

Each EU country has targets for increasing the use of renewable energy sources by 2020 and for Finland the target is demanding 38 %. In 2011 the share of renewable energy sources was 33 % from total energy consumption. Main part of the growth is planned to be covered by forest biomass. Other renewable energy sources are wind power, solar power, biogas and agro biomass. This study focuses on regional energy balance of 2020 in South-East Finland and forecast the shares and possibilities of different energy sources. Regional energy balance for 2020 can be used as a guideline for future energy plans and strategies. Achieving national targets requires new operations and investments on energy production from local participants and support from EU, national and local level. In 2010 the share of renewable energy sources in South-East Finland was 57 % but according to this study it is still possible to increase the use of them in South-East Finland. The most important renewable energy sources are forest biomass and wind power, biogas and solar power will have more local effects. These are preliminary results from ongoing research project.
