Abstract:

The security and sustainability of Irish energy supply is at risk, while renewable energy implementation policies have been disproportionally allocated across energy-usage sectors. As one of the most promising biomass sources in the Irish context, miscanthus offers a potential solution. This paper specifically examines the multifaceted issue of renewable heat provision, alongside an assessment of the potential contribution of miscanthus. Socio-economic and environmental benefits as well as an established Irish agricultural sector provide an ideal backdrop for the usage of energy crops, yet progress has not been forthcoming. Barriers to widespread adoption are non-technical, largely concentrated at the implementation stage. Education and willingness to address these difficulties are highlighted. Other key factors of success include financial incentives and long-term supply contracts plus management of risk and supply chain by energy service companies.
