Abstract:

The focus of this paper is to discuss on requirements and challenges of pyrolysis oil transportation in Finland. Pyrolysis oil is renewable liquid fuel which raw materials are e.g. sawdust, logging residues and other wood chips. Pyrolysis oil can be utilized as a fuel in heat and electricity production when replacing e.g. fossil oil. In Finland pyrolysis oil has been produced in pilot and demonstration scales, but today there are investments going on to start production in industrial scale. Possible alternatives for transportation are road, railway and waterway. Pyrolysis oil has never been transported in large-scale in Finland. Most significant requirements for transportation are acidity and high density of pyrolysis oil which sets requirements for the materials and transportation equipment. According to this paper constant domestic pyrolysis oil flows are most reasonable to operate with tank trucks. Railway transport could be potential for domestic fixed routes and waterway transport could be utilized in pyrolysis oil exportation. All transportation methods have limitations and advantages compared to each other. Locations of the production site and end users will eventually determine the most suitable method for transportation.
