Abstract:
For many years, anaerobic digestion has been recognized as the best way to handle organic waste streams, no matter whether originating from agricultural, industrial or municipal sources. Industrial organic products considered as waste problems are used for energy production, and nutrients contained in the organic wastes are made more bioavailable. Introduction of an Integrated BioRefinery into a large agroindustrial site (food processing plant, dairy, bioethanol plant, MSW processing site, etc.) not only leads to a better energy balance, but also to a better utilization of organic wastes. Integrated BioRefinery, including biogas production and nutrient recovery, is often an ideal solution to challenges as rising energy costs, disposal of wastes, treatment of waste water, capture of greenhouse gases and displacement of fossil fuels.
