Abstract:

Continuous ethanol fermentation of sorghum juice and methane fermentation of stillage after distillation were studied in lab scale. The necessity of the addition of mineral salts was firstly confirmed. Continuous ethanol fermentation of sorghum juice was carried out using flocculating Saccharomyces cerevisiae strain KF-7. The effects of dilution rate, temperature, and aeration rate on ethanol yield were investigated. At the dilution rate of 0.3 h-1 and the aeration rate of 0.025 vvm, the ethanol fermentation kept stable at 35 oC and the ethanol productivity of 20.6 g/l/h was obtained. Aeration rate showed obvious effect on ethanol yield as well as productivity, both of which decreased with decreasing aeration rate. The stillageafter distillation was subjected to methane fermentation. When C/N was adjusted to 40, the maximum TOC loading rate reached to 10 g/l/d. Energy balance of the ethanol-methane two-stage fermentation showed that 86% of energy in sorghum juice converted to ethanol and 14% to methane. The study revealed that sorghum juice could be converted to ethanol and methane with relatively high energy recovery efficiency by using ethanol-methane tow-stage fermentation.
