Abstract:
This study demonstrates improved glucose recovery from coconut husk which is one of lignocellulosic material by employing an ionic liquid pretreatment. Two ionic liquids: -butyl-3-methylimidazolium chloride (BmimCl) and-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium acetate (EmimOAc)were studied. The pretreatment was accomplished by first subjecting coconut husk to an ionic liquid. Then the resulting cellulose was regenerated by using deionized water as an anti-solvent. The pretreated materials were enzymatically hydrolyzed using Celluclast 1.5L and Novozymes 188 for a maximum incubation time of 72 hours. The best ionic liquid was EmimOAc. When used at a temperature of 130°C for a duration of 2 hours, a maximum glucose recovery at 62.8% was achieved. In addition, the lignin content was decreased by up to 14.6% compared to the untreated coconut husk.
