Abstract:
Torrefaction is a biomass pre-treatment at temperature ranging 200-300°C for 10min to 2h. Torrefaction aims to optimize the energy density, increase the conservation possibility and produce a better material for further applications like combustion or gasification. Laboratory scale reactors are common but continuous industrial torrefaction plants with high flow rates are still rare. This paper presents an adaptation of a robust, simple and modern technology coming from the food industry with high capacity perspectives. Several kinds of biomass (wood chips, coniferous barks, olive pips and straw) have been torrefied at different temperatures (240°C to 300°C) up to 30 minutes. A large range of torrefied products, included biochar, have been produced and analysed. Torrefied wood chips mass yields range from 50.8% at 300°C to 74.2% at 260°C.
