Abstract:

Pyrolysis is the fundamental principle of various thermochemical conversions including fast pyrolysis and gasification. One of the major drawbacks of these pyrolysis-based processes is “low product selectivity”. Undesired by-products reduced the conversion efficiency and sometimes make their operation difficult through clogging of the pipeline, coking and so on. Thus, the reaction control for improving the product selectivity would be an important and challenging issue in this field. We have discovered that the intermolecular hydrogen bonding is a key driving fractor for polymerization, dehydration and char formation during the pyrolysis of carbohydrate biomass. These reactions reduce the quality of the products as chemicals and liquid fuels.
