Abstract:
The increased variety and costs of substrates requires a sufficient digester management to maximize the economic as well as the ecological benefit of anaerobic digestion in the future. To enable a safe and automated operation of digesters, the suitability of the hydrogen content of the biogas as an online available indicator for process evaluation has been investigated. To develop a control system, investigations in batch as well as in continuous mode have been carried out in technical scale by measuring the parameters hydrogen, biogas production and the concentration of volatile fatty acids. Investigations with different substrates showed close connections between the concentration of the online measured hydrogen concentration in the biogas and the organic loading rate, enabling an early indication of process failures i.e. caused by shockloads. The results suggest that the hydrogen concentration within the biogas is capable of being a highly sensitive on-line parameter for the automated management of anaerobic digesters near their maximum sustainable loading capacity.
