Abstract:

The supercritical water gasification (SCWG) holds promise as a technology to convert waste biomass into valuable, environmentally friendly energy. It is suitable for energy conversion of wet biomass. Long-time continuous operation with large-sized device is vital for practical realization, but it has not been reported so far. We conducted the successful operation of long-time continuous test with pilot plant (1 t/d treatment capacity). Activated carbon has been reported as a gasification catalyst in SCWG. We suggested suspending a fine activated carbon catalyst in feedstock for SCWG test. In this study, we used shochu residue for feedstock. Without activated carbon, heat exchanger “tube” (inside the inner tube of double pipe) was blocked by tar. When activated carbon is added, pressure loss in heat exchanger “annulus” (space between inner and outer tubes) increased. This is probably due to the sedimentation of coarse activated carbon particles. Optimal activated carbon concentration thus exists. Based on this, we tried 1 day level continuous testing, and got good result.
