Abstract:
Applied studies of biomass supply chains require geographical data about biomass sources and transport networks. However, a typical situation is that the data of interest is not publicly available, or the price of the data is unreasonable. Recently, obtaining geographical data has become easier because some European governments have made decisions about opening public databases. This paper is a review of geographical openaccess data that can be used for biomassavailability and supply analyses in Europe. The paper also presents two case studies where biomass availability and road transportation was analysed. According to the results, the availability and pricing of alternative data sources vary greatly within European countries. Additionally, selection of source data and geographical limitations made in the analyses had significant impacts on the results in the case studies.
