Abstract:

Some time ago relief organizations like the Red Cross have created Emergency Response Units (ERU) for conflict areas. These units are developed to be ready for operation within 72 hours. To prevent epidemics like cholera and typhus, which are very common in refugee camps, because of the low standards of hygiene, they decided to improve the system by adding a mobile biogas plant. This Upgrade should be up to reduce the pathogenic germs in human feces and produce renewable energy at the same time. The International Biogas and Bioenergy Centre of Competence (IBBK Fachgruppe Biogas GmbH) is the German Partner of the project consortium, which includes twelve European Institutions. The assignment of the IBBK will be to develop a mobile small¬scale biogas plant customized for 200 people, which will be fed by the human feces and kitchen waste. In order to guarantee a sufficient level of sanitation and to prevent epidemics caused through hygienic reasons, the plant will be operated under thermophilic conditions, at least 50°C guaranteed for at least 24 hours.
