Abstract:
In olive-oil extraction, the two-phase continuous-centrifugation process generates two liquid effluents, wastewater from olive oil washing (WOOW) and wastewater from olives washing (WOW). The second can be used directly in the irrigation but the first with a COD on the order of 5.3 g O2/dm3 require treatment before being discharged to the environment. This wastewater contains 5.4 g/dm3 of total solids, of which 1.73 g/dm3 are mineral solids, comprised mainly of potassium salts that can be used as nutrients to produce an algal biomass with a balanced biochemical composition of lipids, proteins and carbohydrates. Experiments with 5, 10, 15 and 20% (v/v) of WOOW were performed on laboratory scale, using Scenedesmus obliquus CCAP 276/3A. The operating conditions were: culture pH 7.0, temperature 298.15 K, agitation speed 110 rpm, and under a light-dark cycle (12 h illumination per day). Fundamentally, this work tries to study the growth kinetics (maximum specific growth rate, µm, and volumetric biomass productivity, Pb) as well as the formation of by-products in the biomass. The experimental condition most conducive to lipid production was an initial WOOW concentration of 10% (v/v). Under this condition, the highest values of µm and Pb were 0.012 h-1 and 0.5 10-3 g/dm3h, respectively.
