Fermentation by Debaryomyces Hansenii NRRL Y-7426 from Detoxificated Olive-Tree Pruning Hemicellulosic Hydrolyzate

Abstract:

The purpose of this research was to study the fermentability of a new method of detoxification applied to olive-tree pruning hemicellulosic hydrolyzates with Debaryomyces hansenii NRRL Y-7426. The olive-tree pruning hemicellulosic hydrolyzates obtained from acid hydrolysis were not fermented by D. hansenii, neither growth nor consumes was observed. This strong inhibition, even in cultures from acid hydrolysis in lower concentrations, caused the need for a detoxification process. It could be noted the high concentration of hydroxytyrosol, as well as oleuropein. Among the wide variety of detoxification processes, we selected the use of ethyl acetate, producing removal of potential inhibitors (mainly furfural and phenolic compounds) without decreasing the concentration of sugars. Hydrolyzates obtained were conditioned by the detoxification treatment above and growth and substrate consumption was observed, although slowly, but there was no generation of any bioproducts analyzed since the carbon source was used almost exclusively in reproduction, reaching a high concentration of biomass, close to 8 kg m-3.
