Abstract:

The worldwide increasing demand for biomass fuels resulted in a technical cooperation named Biorema. This cooperation allowed Brazil, the European Community and the U.S.A. to evaluate the capacity of their laboratories, which are involved in conformity assessment of fuels, in determining the physical chemical parameters of biodiesel. For this, it was necessary to use procedures established both on standards and also on developed protocols. The total ester content determination in methylic biodiesel (FAME) is of prime importance since its minimum content is regulated worldwide. On the other hand, the knowledge of the individual ester contents can provide means to evaluate the biofuel properties related to its storage and distribution. The estimate of measurement uncertainties is needed for comparability and also for developing a certified reference material (CRM) of biodiesel. This work aims to present the results of the total and individual ester content in rapeseed biodiesel from an international comparison realized by the National Institutes of Metrology from Brazil (INMETRO) and the U.S.A. (NIST) and the Institute for Reference Materials and Measurements from Belgium (IRMM). The measuring results of the total and individual ester contents in biodiesel showed good comparability that provided conformity assessment among the metrological systems.
