Abstract:

The plans to reach the ambitious climate protection and renewable energy objectives of the EU and Germany for 2020 must be reviewed and possibly realigned after the German withdrawal from nuclear energy. The new situation requires new approaches to bridge the gaps in energy supply. The consumption of fossil energy resources and the emission of CO2 can be significantly and sustainably reduced by using biofuels. But the national biomass potentials are limited so that a strong increase of the bio-based RES technologies will face supply difficulties. The same time, the potentials for bioenergy in Eastern Europe i.e. Russian Federation and Ukraine are tremendous and nearly unexplored. The cooperation with government organisations, enterprises and NGOs for the promotion of bioenergy and biofuels in these countries could play a key role for a sustainable increase of cross-border activities on bioenergy. The aim of the recent German cooperations is to promote biomass production and bioenergy in Eastern Europe.
