Abstract:

Consumption of fuel energy at household level in India is very inefficient. Therefore, biomass pellets and pellet¬stoves were introduced in 110 rural households of Haryana (North¬west agrarian state) through training. Respondents had nuclear families (58.18%), were young (54.54%), illiterate (51.81%), had farming occupation (55.45%) and low family education status (38.18%). All respondents used traditional chulha (cook¬ stove). They used fuel¬ wood for cooking meals (70.00%), crop residues for heating water and preparing tea (56.36% & 72.725% respectively), and dung cakes for simmering milk and preparing cattle feed (47.27% & 80.90% respectively). After training, respondents used biomass pellet¬ stove for water heating and chapati making (90.00%), milk boiling (80.90%), and daal (lentil) preparation (68.18%). Respondents used ˝ kg pellets (88.18%) and stove burnt up to 45 minutes at a time. Respondents perceived pellet¬ stove as beneficial as it was smoke¬ free with no blackening of utensils/walls (88.18%), low ash content and no biomass mess. It was also perceived as easy to use and move. Regular continuous supply of pellets and initial cost of pellet¬ stove were expressed as major constraints. These findings have important implications for policy¬makers, field functionaries and mass media for creating awareness and mass adoption of this technology at household level.
