Abstract:

Sweet and fiber sorghum (Sorghum bicolor (L.) Moench) is a drought tolerant energy crop with a high nitrogen use efficiency. Sorghum is well adapted as summer crop to southern European environments where sorghum obtains benefits from high radiation and expresses its high water use efficiency. The AGRISOS Project studies sweet and fiber sorghums and evaluates them as a potential energy crop. Different harvest dates and varieties have been tested. Aerial biomass (dry matter) harvested on September was higher than 40 t ha¬1 for the best sweet sorghum varieties and 60 t ha¬1 for the fiber sorghum varieties. These elevated biomass productions make this plant a promising energy crop to obtain biofuels such as bioethanol and biogas.
