Abstract:

The cork industry generates a large amount of waste in different processes. These residues are mainly cooking water, cork dust, sludge and mill lands or funds boiler firing. The use of agro-industrial waste for energy is increasing mainly due to the environmental benefits that are obtained: zero CO2 balance, reduced emissions of sulphur and nitrogen oxides, reduced emissions of particles, etc. Preparation and processing industries of cork generate a large amount of biomass waste, thus it is interesting to analyze its use for thermal/power energy production in the industry and other biomass plants. However, this energetic use obtained from waste cork presents some limits. The feasibility of this use is determined by a number of issues among which include the possible need for pre¬treatment to prepare the waste to appropriate conditions of use, selecting the most suitable technology of use based on the properties of the waste and the quantities available. In this work, we have performed the quantification, characterization and analysis of thermal degradation of several residues to determine the possibilities and technology of use.
