Abstract:

Environmental impacts and external costs have been assessed for the major wood combustion appliance classes currently in use in Switzerland. Fuel oil, natural gas and coal systems were also analysed for comparison. Contributions from direct appliance emissions and indirect contributions from the rest of the life cycle chain (i.e. indirect emissions from wood production and other production processes, and land use contributions) have been estimated for each system. Impacts considered in the external cost analysis include: human mortality and morbidity, crop yield changes, biodiversity losses, material damages, and climate change due to greenhouse gas emissions.
