Abstract:
This paper investigates the briquetting process of common reeds (Phragmites Australis) which are important natural biomass resource in Latvia. The effect of wall friction during the compacting of grinded common reed has been investigated. Common reeds were grinded by hammer mill four different sieve screen sizes – 1.5, 6, 12 and 20 mm. Wall friction coefficient was evaluated from difference of upper and lower axial pressure in closed die, ratio of radial and axial pressure and geometrical parameters of briquettes. Strain gages were used for radial pressure determination. Average value of radial and axial pressure ratio change from 0.42 to 0.53 depending on particles size. Average value of friction coefficient changes from 0.12 to 0.076 depending on particles size.
