Abstract:

The objective of this paper is to present and apply two different methodological approaches for the assessment of the biomass resources and their territorial availability in two South European rural regions: (a) Capitanata (IT) (b) Thessaly (GR). The corresponding energy potentials and the integration of the biomass based energy applications into the regional energy systems will be also discussed. Scenarios about future development of the agroŽenergy sector, customized according to the specific characteristics of each region, will be reported within a 2020 timeŽframe. Throughout this process the identification of the similarities and differences of the two regions is aimed, in order to map the potential framework for creating the environment in which biofuel and bioenergy projects can be appropriately developed.
