Abstract:
Moisture devices are an attractive mean for many entrepreneurs for quickly assessing wood chips' moisture content for several objectives. In this experiment three devices were tested. One of the devices is a handheld resistive apparatus, originally designed for timber, for which it has been tested the amount of chips needed to get reasonable results. The other two devices are specially designed for bulk solid biofuels including wood chips. The results of checking the three devices, which are currently in use in Catalonia, show a certain bias and a relative error on the bias over 12%. This limits the use of the devices for trading, unless a certain agreement is done among the trading parties. Although this, these moisture meters are a practical instrument for performing internal controls for solid biofuels' quality assurance procedures. Further calibration for Mediterranean biofuels may also be needed.
