Abstract:

The project ‘GNUT-Biogas' (2010 -2013) will provide urgently needed knowledge required to make the energetic potential of permanent grassland accessible and consequently contribute to the preservation of permanent grassland areas. Seven productive permanent grassland types are evaluated. They are examined under four different management variants which can be described as production of: 1. high quality fodder for dairy cattle 2. high quality fodder for dairy cattle with reduced level of nitrogen fertilisation 3. biomass tapping the local resources 4. biomass with focus on plant population preservation Biomass yields and biomass quality are systematically determined and biogas and methane yields will be measured in batch tests from ensiled biomass. The variants 1 and 4 are the ones with the highest DM yields (7.2 -14.9 Mg ha-1), the variants 1 and 2 with the best quality for biogas production. The project is still going on, so further results are to be expected.
