Abstract:

As part of 'ReduPo Bois' project, this study focuses on the evaluation of performances of a commercialized electrostatic system for reduction of pollutants emitted by wood combustion. The heating appliance used in this study is an inset. Measured pollutants are Total Suspended Particles (TSP) in mass, particles by class of diameters (PM10, PM2.5, PM1, PM0.1) in number, CO, CO2, Total HydroCarbons (THC), NO, NO2 and SO2. Measurements are respectively performed with this system in service and idle, so that to evaluate its efficiency. Moreover, the pressure drop generated by this system, its resistance to heat and its impact on corrosion (in the chimney) are studied. The mean efficiency measured from these tests for this system, at nominal heat output, is of 75 % for PM10, PM2.5, PM1 and PM0.1 (in number) and appears to be negligible for the others particulate and gaseous pollutants. The pressure drop generated is negligible. Moreover, performances of this system does not appear to be impacted after a security test representative of a chimney fire, provided the fume temperature at the electrode level is not too high. Lastly, an increase of the global acidity of condensates seems to appear with this system in service.
