Abstract:

One of the major obstacles for the application of biomass gasification systems is the relatively high tar content of the producer gas that inhibits its use in engines or turbines or in catalytic processes like in methanisation or Fischer-Tropsch synthesis without further gas cleaning. The determination of the tar content with conventional methods is very time consuming and does not allow a continuous online monitoring of the gas quality. The approach, to avoid these drawbacks, is an online system that shows the tar concentration in the producer gas during the gasification process and allows an easy monitoring of its trend. In the KIC InnoEnergy DeMiTar project, two different online analyzer systems that allow these features are in development at the University of Stuttgart (at IFK-Stuttgart), the Royal Institute of Technology (Stockholm) and at BTG Biomass Technology group (Enschede). This paper presents the principle of these two techniques, the goals and the roadmap for the DeMiTar project. It shows the status quo and the ongoing steps for the next two years.
