Organic Fraction of Municipal Waste, Wine Industry Residues and Distillery Marcs: Raw Materials for the Production of Lignocellulosic Bioethanol

Abstract:

Use of biofuels in transport sector is one of the strategies for GHGs emissions saving. Bioethanol is a biofuel that can be produced from raw materials as energy crops, residual biomasses, organic fraction of wastes and mowed public green. In this research the technological aspects of bioethanol production from some lignocellulosic wastes were studied for the Gorizia Province, Italy. The considered feedstocks were organic fraction of municipal solid waste mixed with mowed public green, residues from wine industry and wine distilleries. The chosen materials are rich in carbohydrates to convert in bioethanol and this valorization can be valid option to the traditional reutilization, giving an energetic product with higher added value. Dilute acid treatment resulted the best option for pretreating the materials. The following use of commercial enzymes allowed to obtain simple sugars to ferment; yields were compared with enzymatic hydrolysis carried out with fungi Fusarium oxysporum, Trichoderma reesei. The co-fermentation was done with Saccharomyces cerevisiae, Pichia stipitis. The choice of using fungi instead of commercial enzymes in the hydrolysis is good to make process less expensive. The interesting results suggest to consider the use of these materials for bioethanol production thanks to the good yields obtained at lab scale.
