Abstract:
In the present work, the acid hydrolysis of barley straw was studied using a batch reactor. This kind of hydrolysis was catalyzed by sulfuric acid for acid hydrolysis time 0-60 min. The analysis of experimental data of reaction kinetics indicates that this is a potential mechanism for cellulose and hemicelluloses hydrolysis, due to a rapid hydrolysis intermediate reaction in the case that the reaction ending temperature is adequately high. The kinetics of acid hydrolysis of cellulose and hemicelluloses were simulated using a kinetic model where the acidity of the liquid phase is (i) increasing due to the acids produced within the complex network of reactions and simultaneously (ii) decreasing due to the neutralization by the ash content. The temperature profile and the pH profile during the process were also studied. The reaction rate constants were calculated according to this model using non¬linear regression analysis. Process parameters investigated herein include variation in reaction ending temperature sulfuric acid concentration and reaction time. The sugars produced by the acid hydrolysis process, mainly xylose and glucose, are useful for fermentation in bioethanol industry.
