Abstract:

The aim of this work was to simulate and optimize the two¬step non¬isothermal autohydrolysis of wheat straw cellulose and hemicelluloses in a batch reactor. The process parameters investigated herein were the reaction ending temperature and the reaction time. A non¬isothermal kinetic model, developed in an earlier work, was used to simulate and optimize the process. The results of fitting this model to the experimental data were compared to the results obtained through the severity factor R0–model by means of the standard error of estimate (SEE). The first¬step was studied in the temperature range between 160 and 240 oC for 0¬50 min isothermal time and the maximum total xylose was 75% w/w at 180 oC after 70 min total reaction period. The second¬step was studied using autohydrolyzed wheat straw (at the optimal conditions of the first-step) as raw material, in the temperature range 160¬240 oC for 0¬50 min isothermal time and the maximum total glucose was 31% w/w at 240 oC after 82 min total reaction period. The total sugar yield of this two¬step process was 45% w/w, higher compared to the 34% w/w of the single¬step autohydrolysis.
