Abstract:
Generally, the chipping of five years old poplar plantations is carried out in a "static phase". Here the product is taken from piles made earlier by using a hydraulic arm having a gripper that feed the chipping machine. The Engineering Unit of the Agricultural Research Council (CRA-ING) of Monterotondo (Rome, Italy) has developed a self-propelled chipper capable to work in a "dynamic phase", collecting with pick up heads the windrowed biomass and processing it autonomously. Previously, the biomass was cut and arranged in windrows by using a prototype of cut windrower. The machine demonstrated a good functionality in all phases of work (harvest, -1 -1 conveying, and chipping) with an operative working capacity equal to 0.20 ha hand an hourly operative of 38 t h. The chipper is capable to chip trees with a maximum diameter of 380 mm.
