Abstract:

Despite positive general attitudes towards renewable energies in Germany, there are partially massive obstacles for these new technologies when it comes to direct confrontation with people. Biogas perceived from a people´s perspective is probably the most complex renewable energy technology, coming along with a long list of po¬tential side effects confronting them in their roles as citizens, residents and consumers. This paper shows the results of an analysis of German (mass)media and of an online survey, giving insights in the diversity and the interactions of these side effects in the minds of people. In order to realize energy turnaround in Germany, understanding people's thinking with respect to renewable energies is an essential prerequisite to work on public perception and acceptance. In this sense this paper delivers useful information to understand people's thinking on side effects of biogas plants and thus set the course for the establishment of more biogas plants in the coming years.
