Abstract:
Süd-Chemie AG, a Clariant Group Company, has developed a highly innovative technology for the production of cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues like wheat straw, corn stover or sugar cane bagasse. By using tailor made enzymes, produced process ¬integrated and highly optimized microorganisms for various kinds of lignocellulosic feedstock, the sustainable and energy self¬ sufficient sunliquid® process ensures highest possible yields while cutting production costs to a minimum. In July 2011 construction started on a demonstration plant with an annual ethanol output of 1,000 tons. The plant is currently in final commissioning phase and will start into operation in summer 2012. It will demonstrate the economic competitiveness to first generation processes and constitutes the last step from laboratory to commercial production. Süd¬Chemie AG is expecting to realize a first production plant in 2013/2014 with an annual capacity of 50,000 to 150,000 tons of cellulosic ethanol.
